The use of Russian Glonass satellites is a misunderstood concept. The Glonass satellites are not used separately, but in combination with GPS satellites in the same algorithm. The coordinate systems and time are different in both systems, but the coordinate system transformation is known and the time difference can be modelled in real time.

The requirement for more satellites is clearly understood by the European Community in its plans to develop a European Galileo satellite system for positioning. When it will be available in 2009 - 2010 there will be combined GPS+Glonass+Galileo receivers available. While you are waiting for that to happen, we can already provide you 2/3rd of the capability ( GPS+Glonass).

The current 14 Glonass satellites added to the 28 GPS satellites gives us a total of 42 satellites. Russia has plans to increase the number of satellites to 18 by 2006. We have two kinds of customers, the ones that try GPS+Glonass receivers and never go back to using plain GPS. And then we have the customers, who don't want to try. Which type are you ?

Good combinations for GPS+Glonass are:

  • Javad GGD and GG product family
  • Novatel OEMV product family
